Los Angeles Times Travel & Adventure Show
Offers Vacations from the Unique to the Exotic


Los Angeles, CA, February 1, 2007 – The word “adventure” means different things to different people. So does the breadth of experiences to be had by adventure travelers – those who seek to travel responsibly, take home an experience, engage in activities and explore different cultures. Whatever a traveler’s passion, it can be found at The Los Angeles Times Travel & Adventure Show – the West Coast’s largest – coming Saturday and Sunday, February 10 and 11, 2007, to the Long Beach Convention Center.

Focusing on what’s hot in active and adventure travel – from sailing the Grecian isles to elephant treks in India and from volunteer vacations such as building schools in Honduras to rainforest excursions in Nicaragua - there is something for everyone. Attendees can meet travel companies, tour operators, tourism officials, outfitters, guides and travel professionals who have the firsthand knowledge travelers need to plan and book their next great adventure. Hundreds of destinations, resorts and tour operators will attend.

New this year: the National Geographic ADVENTURE Theatre where the world’s foremost explorers will mingle with event goers and give presentations on their journeys. Topping the list are Colin Angus and Julie Wafaei, recently named “Adventures of the Year” by National Geographic ADVENTURE magazine. Be on hand to experience how they circumnavigated the globe using only their own human power.

“People think active and adventure travel is about 18- to 30-year-old males who drive around in a beat-up old camper van and climb cliffs with no rope,” said John Golicz, one of the show producers. “But the average adventure traveler is actually a 47-year-old woman.”

“Whether you are a baby boomer or Gen-Xer, The LA Times Travel and Adventure Show offers an international festival that showcases not only destinations but also the cultures associated with them,” said Los Angeles Times Travel editor Catharine Hamm.

Here are some of the “vacations of a lifetime” that attendees can explore at the show:

Exotic Travel

Attendees can catch a glimpse of the exotic – those far-flung destinations that one reads about in storybooks or travel magazines. These places are real and accessible. Why not try snorkeling in the Red Sea? Or tour the ancient palaces of Korea? What about a wildlife safari in Rwanda or birding in Nicaragua? These are just a few of the many exotic trips that one can discover at the show. In addition, the Rainforest Alliance, which is committed to global conservation is hosting a pavilion at the show, featuring eco-friendly attractions and resorts in Central America.

The Best of the Caribbean

When it comes to island adventures, the warm people, cultures and natural beauty of the Caribbean is highly alluring. The Caribbean provides a wealth of tempting trips that include diving in Bonaire, treks to the Boiling Lake of Dominica, snorkeling the world’s second largest barrier reef off Belize or touring the spice markets of Grenada.

Asian Treasures

West Coast residents can take advantage of a wealth of Asian destinations that will be represented at the show. Try a soak in the Poring Hot Springs in Malaysia, touring the ancient palaces in Korea, camel safaris through the Taklimakan Desert in China, visit the National Palace Museum in Taiwan or enjoy cultural programs in Mongolia.
