Event open to public and travel industry March 29 and 30 at The Washington Convention Center

Milford, CT, March 5, 2008 – Is a bush trek across the Serengeti really the world’s top adventure vacation? Are fertilized duck embryos a gastronomic delicacy? Discover these answers and the world’s top active and adventure travel providers offering the planet’s most exciting experiential vacation options when The Adventures in Travel Expo (ATE) pulls into Washington, DC on Saturday and Sunday, March 29 and 30, 2008. For two days, the region’s experiential travelers will be able to explore the extraordinary world of active and adventurous travel available on each of the seven continents without leaving the Washington Convention Center.

The hottest vacation trends will be showcased at ATE this year. The Adventures in Travel Expo is the world’s largest active and adventure travel show. From train trips through India to wildlife safaris in Africa, fly fishing in Maine to music festivals in the Caribbean, and from cultural tours in Ethiopia to wind surfing in Myrtle Beach – it’s all here. Attendees will find thousands of experts from around the globe ready to assist in planning their next experiential vacation.

Travelers may book trips directly with Liberty Travel located on the show floor and can access show-only specials when booking.
From the world’s most bizarre foods to the 1,000 places to see before you die, ATE features the industry’s strongest line-up of travel experts ready to share their experiences and advice. The founders of the famed guidebook series, Lonely Planet, Tony and Maureen Wheeler, Andrew Zimmern, host of the hit Travel Channel show, “Bizarre Foods of the World,” and Patricia Schultz, author of 1,000 Places to See Before You Die will present what is expected to be compelling seminars on the Adventure Theatre stage. They will be followed by experts including Marybeth Bond, known as the “gutsy traveler” and author of the new book, 50 Best Girlfriend Getaways, and other speakers who will present live destination seminars.

Some of the world’s most renowned explorers will present sessions at the National Geographic ADVENTURE Theatre. The line-up includes acclaimed photographer/writer and climber Gordon Wiltsie; National Geographic ADVENTURE’s 2007 Adventurer of the Year, Andrew Skurka, who completed an epic 6,875 mile solo hike known as the Great Western Loop; and Costas Christ, global travel columnist and co-founder and past president, International Ecotourism Society, who will discuss “Travel Green: How to Have the Trip of a Lifetime and Help Protect the Earth.”

The interactive adventure experience sets Adventures in Travel Expo apart from other travel events. The show brings interaction to the show floor with a range of activities such as lively, cultural performances on the Global Beats Stage that include Israeli musicians, Aruba Carnival performers, belly dancers and traditional Irish dancers. Attendees may “fly” on an aerial zip line, swing through an adventure ropes course, dive in a huge heated scuba pool and climb up the rock wall – all while learning about the perfect getaway for themselves or the family.

“The biggest trend in travel today is active and experiential vacations. Increasingly, consumers are seeking active, adventure, educational and experiential travel over traditional resorts or group bus tours. All our research indicates that attendees see themselves not as tourists but as voyagers, and ATE offers the type of trips that fit perfectly with the alternative to bus tours and straight leisure travel,” noted John Golicz, CEO of Unicomm, Expo organizer. “Adventure travel is all about sight-doing, instead of sight-seeing, and our show has a trip for every person and every budget.”

The Adventures in Travel Expo is open to the public on Saturday, March 29 from 10:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and on Sunday, March 30 from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Washington Convention Center. Adult admission is $15 per day; children under 16 are free when accompanied by an adult. The Adventures in Travel Expo is sponsored by The Travel Channel, Ethiopian Airlines and National Geographic Adventure magazine.
